Chapter Objectives - To broaden understanding and support for the New York State constitutional amendment which declared that the Forest Preserve shall be forever kept as wild forest lands. To foster public interest in the conservation of natural resources, especially in the Catskills and the Adirondack Mountains. To promote the acquisition of additional forest land for protection of watershed, wildlife, and recreational use; to advocate sound forest management outside the Forest Preserve. To teach and encourage proper non-destructive recreational use of the woodlands and mountains, and to offer instruction in outdoor skills. To organize and conduct regular outings in the Adirondack and Catskill Preserves, in a safe and friendly atmosphere.

The Appalachian Mountain Club's New York-North Jersey Chapter is the largest and most comprehensive canoe and kayak organization in the NYC area, with over 100 activities throught the year. We paddle on quiet water, whitewater and sea kayak trips ranging from one day to one week. We offer summer paddling classes for novice through intermediate paddlers, whitewater rescue classes to keep our trips safe, and winter pool sessions to refine our skills. We maintain a fleet of 60 canoes and kayaks for our members to rent at a nominal cost, so you needn't own your own boat to join us.

AW's original purpose since 1954 has been to distribute information among its Affiliate Clubs. AW's relationship with local clubs has provided the backbone for much of the river conservation and access work it accomplishes throughout the country. Over 100 clubs are now AW Club Affiliates and they are all doing great work on your behalf. If you don't belong to a club, consider joining one of the organizations found on this page.
