Current Fire Situation:

The Elephant Fire is burning on the Plumas National Forest east of Highway 70 in the Feather River Canyon near the Elephant Butte Tunnel.

The fire is estimated at 274 acres and is burning at a low to moderate rate of spread. The fire continues to back down into a Grizzly Creek tributary. Helicopters dropped water on the affected area, slowing the rate of spread and assisting fire crews. Today crews will continue to construct and secure fire lines around the perimeter. Remote access and steep terrain limit personnel access.  Nine Type 1 Hot Shot Crews are currently assigned to the fire. Due to increased fire traffic and possible debris rolling down onto the highway from the fire area above, residents and visitors are urged to use caution while driving in the area.

Road Delays:   CA State Highway 70 is currently open. However, motorists should continue to exercise caution while driving through the fire area.  To learn about any possible delays, please visit the Cal Trans website at: www.dot.ca.gov or call Cal Trans at 1-800-427-7623.

All campgrounds and local businesses are open.

Fire Information is available by calling (530) 283-7882 or 532-9755, or by logging on to www.inciweb.org and clicking on the Elephant Incident.
