American Whitewater has joined a tribally led effort to protect 1.1 million acres surrounding the Grand Canyon as a National Monument. The Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument would protect important landscapes and sensitive tributaries on the north and south rims. Use your voice now to help protect the Grand Canyon by signing this petition! 

The lands within the National Monument itself are home to world class recreation, important cultural sites and traditional uses, endangered species, and critical water resources. The proposed National Monument will also provide important benefits to the Grand Canyon itself. Water quality in the canyon will be protected by preventing uranium mining and other harmful developments, and key seeps and springs that feed the Colorado River will be preserved. The proposed area will provide critical habitat for endangered species like the Condors that visit boaters from their perch on the Navajo Bridge.

The National Monument honors at least 12 tribes that have been the stewards of the Grand Canyon since time immemorial. Baaj Nwaavjo is Havasupai for “where tribes roam” and I’tah Kukveni is Hopi for “our footprints”. In April of 2023, tribes came together and formally called on the Biden Administration to protect this incredible landscape under the Antiquities Act. Now, we need your help to demonstrate broad support for protecting the Grand Canyon and its surrounding landscape and watersheds.
